Sept. 17- Eighth grade football vs. Perry and eighth grade volleyball vs. Ogden

The 8th grade Ram football team got its second victory of the season with a final score of 16-0 in the first game over the Perry Blue Jays in Jefferson Thursday, Sept. 17. The Rams won the second game as well, with a score of 8-6.

The game was scoreless at the end of the first quarter.  With five minutes to go in the second quarter the Rams scored on a four yard run by Colby Kafer. They could not connect on the PAT. The score at half time was 6-0.

In the second half Rams Tyler Teeples and Caden Lowmiller scored a safety, making the score 8-0 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter for the Rams was very exciting.  There were two interceptions in the game, both occurring in the fourth quarter.  Xavier Hayes had an interception as did Spencer Whipple, putting the Rams into scoring position again.  Hayes scored on a 30 yard run to make the score 14-0.  That was followed by a pass from Brent Riley to Carter Morton for the two-point conversion, making the score 16-0.

The defense made some big plays keeping Perry scoreless in the game.  “Lowmiller, middle linebacker/nose guard, did a good job running our defense. The kids overcame some penalties and turnovers and worked together to get the win in the end,” coach Chad Morton said.

In the second 8th grade game the Rams got another victory over the Blue Jays 8-6.  The heat set in for this game as the sun came out of the clouds and temperature increased. Players fought through the heat for the whole game. The Rams scored on a 30 yard run by Brandon Bollig. The Rams also made their two-point conversion with a pass from Geoff Goff to Spencer Whipple.  Corey Higgins had several long runs as tailback along with Joel Ward at fullback.  Brandon Carstens stepped up to play offensive tackle when we needed one in the game and did a great job, Morton said.  Kaleb Fisher had some nice tackles at middle linebacker along with Garrett  Tasler at outside linebacker.  This team has six new players on it this year.

The eighth grade girls’ volleyball team hosted Ogden Sept. 17 in the Greene County Middle School gym.  All of the games were very close, but the Rams were able to win the A and B matches.

Game scores for the A squad were 21-19, 21-17, 14-16. Scores for the B squad were 26-24, 21-16, 13-15.

Overall, the A squad was 2-1 in matches and the B squad was 3-0. Overall game records on the season are 6-5 for the A squad and 7-3 for the B squad.

Top servers reported by coach Teresa Green were Julia Saul, 12 for 12 for one ace for 100 percent; Kylie Roach, 14 for 15 with six aces for 93 percent; Aubrey Heupel who, 16 for 21 with 11 aces for 76 percent; and Abby Kozal who served 6/8 with two aces for 75 percent. This was

 “We were very evenly matched with Ogden and I was proud to see our girls pull out the wins for both matches.  We continue to improve on our offense,” Green said. 

The team’s next match is Monday, Sept 21, in Jefferson against Saydel.
